Tight Lines Session - August 3rd 2023 - Falmouth, Cornwall.

Tall Ships 2023

We're excited to share the remarkable success of our recent Tight Lines fishing sessions at North Quay. Thanks to a positive discussion with Holly Manvell, Head of Operations at Falmouth Harbour, we secured the go-ahead to host these sessions during the 2023 Tall Ships event.

Discovering the Therapeutic Art of Fishing

Our mission at Tight Lines CIC was clear: to highlight the profound positive impact that fishing can have on mental well-being. We aimed to convey that casting a line goes beyond just a leisure activity—it's a therapeutic escape that nurtures the mind and spirit. Our sessions welcomed participants to engage in free fishing activities, providing all necessary gear, alongside qualified angling coaches to impart essential fishing techniques. Our goal was to empower individuals with the skills and knowledge to embark on their own fishing journeys and harness the mental well-being benefits offered by the serene sea and natural surroundings.

Diving into the Event: Unveiling the Days

The sessions took place on the 16th and 17th of August, spanning from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm each day. These two days witnessed an impressive turnout, with many individuals enthusiastically participating. What's truly remarkable is the openness with which participants, particularly men, shared their personal experiences with mental health challenges. Through fishing, many discovered a therapeutic antidote to their daily stressors. A recurring theme was the nostalgia of childhood fishing experiences shared with grandparents, sparking a desire to transmit this cherished tradition to their own children, an aspiration we were committed to fulfilling.

Uniting Participants: From Locals to Visitors

An unexpected insight emerged as both local residents and visitors joined the sessions in equal measure. Surprisingly, participants displayed an unwavering enthusiasm to extend their fishing endeavors beyond our intended short sessions. Families found themselves engrossed in extended fishing sessions, rekindling the timeless joy of quality bonding time. A diverse array of individuals, spanning age groups and backgrounds, united on North Quay in Falmouth, fostering a sense of unity in diversity.

Beyond Angling: Encompassing Environmental Awareness

Our mission transcended the act of fishing itself. Amid the excitement of catching fish, participants were sensitized to pressing environmental issues affecting our coastlines. We addressed the imperative of reducing plastic waste, be it remnants of fishing gear or fast-food packaging, a responsibility that transcends the pursuit of angling.

Empowering Connections: Friends Helping Friends

Among our most heartening discoveries was the involvement of our own Tight Lines community members. These individuals, who have traversed their own paths of mental health challenges, stepped forward to impart their expertise in fishing, creating a cycle of mutual support and growth. An estimated 10-15 individuals reported tangible improvements in their mental well-being, a testament to the symbiotic relationship between helping oneself and aiding others.

Triumph and Gratitude: Celebrating Success

In sum, our initiative was an unequivocal triumph, a testament to the collaborative efforts of Falmouth Harbour, Holly, and colleague Sue. Their unwavering support magnified our capacity to enrich numerous lives through Tight Lines. We eagerly anticipate future collaborations that hold the potential to amplify our impact and further the cause of Tight Lines.
